Whooping Cranes Spotted
in Beverly Shores
On May 15, 2016
A very rare visit by 2 Whooping Cranes was confirmed by the International Crane Foundation through the use of remote telemetry. On Sunday, May 15th around noon, the 2 cranes were spotted in the great marsh between St Clair and McAllister. One of the birds reported was crane 65-15, who wintered in southern Indiana, but went straight north to Michigan on migration rather than taking the northwest route back to Wisconsin. Crane 65-15 wandered in Michigan for a bit, and as you can see on Photo 2, kept bumping up against the lake. It appears the crane knew where it needed to be but couldn’t figure out how to get there. It wasn’t until May 11th when the crane started south in earnest. At one point we believe that she joined up with crane 27-14 (that was likely the second bird reported), and they were in the IN Dunes area May 14-15 (Photo 1). Crain 65-15 kept going right around the lake and flew right over her release area at Horicon National Wildlife Reserve, and is now in Mead state wildlife area (Photo 2). Thanks to Ann Lacy, Crane Research Coordinator at the International Crane Foundation for providing the information. Also, a special thank you goes to ABSR member Brian O'Neil for forwarding Julia Holmaas' photo to Dr. Ken Brock who set the ball in action to get to the correct resources.
